2,000 Lanterns will Illuminate Walter Pierce Park
Walter Pierce Park (near the Woodley Park Metro station) will be illuminated this Sat., April 21, with 2,000 paper lanterns. DC Emancipation Day “Lights of freedom” will feature a candlelight tribute to freed slaves. The luminaries will honor thousands of African Americans who were buried in what is now Adams Morgan after they gained their freedom during the Civil War.
At least 8,428 African American men, women, and children were buried in the Mount Pleasant Plains Cemetery between 1870 and 1890. More than half of the graves are children.
The park is located off of Calvert Street, NW at the east end of the Ellington Bridge. Lighting of the candles begins around 7 p.m. and the event ends at 9 p.m. Free.
