Where to Celebrate Bastille Day in DC

BastilleBastille Day is observed every year on July 14th as France’s National Holiday in memory of the beginning of the French Revolution. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille, an act symbolic of the end of the French monarchy and the beginning of the modern French nation. This weekend, come celebrate democracy and independence with some great wine, food, and entertainment as only the French can provide right here in DC.

SATURDAY, July 13

The 9th Annual Bastille Day Street Bash and French Maid Relay

The largest Bastille Day celebration in the Western Hemisphere kicks off at 3pm in Adams Morgan, outside L’Enfant Café. The street will be closed off all day for the Can-Can dancers, burlesque shows, music, and food truck pavilion and beer garden. Don’t miss the French maid relay at 6pm and DC’s largest masquerade street ball from 9-11pm. Entrance is $6.

Bistro du Coin Bastille Day Celebration

Known as one of DC’s best French bistros, Bistrot Du Coin always has a good mix of people and food. The restaurant is always lively with DC’s international crowd because it always knows how to throw a good party. French Festival at Hillwood Estate Museum and Gardens

The French Festival will feature dance performances by the New York Baroque Dance Company, live music, French games, hands-on art projects, mimes, French cheeses and pates, and plenty of French champagne (the only real kind). Events take place among Hillwood-founder, Marjorie Post’s first collecting passion for the decorative arts of 18th century France, as well as the magnificent gardens on the estate. The festival runs from 10am-5pm; the Estate is open through 7pm. Price: $18; $10 for students; $5 for children 6-18. Free for children under 6.

Bastille Day Dinner at Bistro La Bonne

With a fun atmosphere and great staff, Bistro La Bonne’s Bastille Day menu offers many authentic French dishes including Coquilles Saint-Jacques, Napoleon de betteraves, and Vichyssoise. The kitchen starts serving at 5pm. You will be entertained by the sounds of Bitter Dose Combo from 7-10:45pm and DJ Vasco from 11pm-close.

Specials at Central Michel Richard

The 2008 James Beard Award winner of best new restaurant is hosting a special celebration to commemorate Bastille Day on Saturday, 5-11pm. The restaurant will have dinner specials, specials on wine and cocktails (including 15% off all French wine bottles), and games. The dining experience will be enhanced with Laissez-Foure, a swingin’ jazz quartet, from 7-10pm.

La Fête Nationale Meal at Bastille

Alexandria’s famous Bastille restaurant is serving up a three course meal to celebrate France’s National Day. Served all day until 9:30pm, the $29 prix fixe menu will feature traditional French dishes such as chicken liver mousse, lamb chops and merguez, mussels, and pèche melba. Reservations are recommended as it will most likely be packed until closing.

Sunday, July 14

French bakery PAUL will hold baguette relay races around the US Navy Memorial at its Penn Quarter location for fast walking youngsters and adults. Each person on a winning team will receive a $25 gift card to PAUL bakery. Participants can sign up here. Children’s fishing and craft activities also include a build your own “Bastille Tower” challenge, followed by a competition where you throw a ball to tear it down.
