Outdoor Ice Skating in & Around the DC Area

Looking for some winter-time fun? There are several good options for outdoor ice skating in the DC area.

The National Gallery of Art transforms its Sculpture Garden Fountain into an ice rink during the winter months complete with lights and its Pavilion Café, which offers not only a fantastic panoramic view of the Sculpture Garden but a wonderful assortment of food and drink as well. After taking in the sculptures and the crisp winter air, make sure to stop in for one of the city’s most delicious hot chocolates.

Open now through March 12, 2017, weather permitting:

Washington Harbour, the multipurpose property along the Georgetown Waterfront, offers D.C.’s largest outdoor ice rink with beautiful views of the Potomac River and a variety of surrounding options for a warm-up drink or meal. Helmets and penguin skate aids are available, free of use, first come first serve.

Open now through March 2017, with weekly skate specials:
Two for Tuesday: 2 for 1 Admissions on Tuesdays from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. (skate rental not included)
College Night: Every Thursday, receive $2 off admission with a valid college ID
Cartoon Skate: Every Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Rock N Skate: Every Saturday night from 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Canal Park is back this year in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, featuring a rink-side cafe and weekly skate specials now through February 26, 2017:

The plaza at Pentagon Row underwent major renovations in 2013 to create an amazing experience for guests. The ice skating rink is 50% larger with an outdoor dual-sided stone fireplace for lounging during skating breaks. Pentagon Row’s 6,840 square foot ice rink is now the largest outdoor rink in Northern Virginia, and the second largest in the state.

Silver Spring’s Veterans’ Plaza is open for its fourth year, surrounded by great restaurants, shops, and plenty of parking, plus a short walk from the redline metro (and parking is free weeknights after 8pm and all day on weekends).

Tysons Corner offers a shopping break on its plaza between Lord & Taylor and Hyatt Regency with a 5200 sq. foot skating rink, open now through early March.
