The Trews to Headline Jammin Java on Feb. 7

By Becca Grimm
Canadian band The Trews are playing at Jammin Java in Vienna on Feb. 7.
The quartet are touring in support of their latest release, Time Capsule, a career-spanning, 21-track collection comprising the band’s biggest hits and fan favorites along with four brand new recordings. The lead single “Beautiful & Tragic” – a co-write with the band and Serena Ryder is currently #6 on the Canadian Rock Radio chart. Additionally, Kid Rock lends his vocals to a special version of the patriotic “Highway Of Heroes.”
The Trews have been one of Canada’s most successful rock bands of the past decade, earning 16 Top 10 Rock radio singles (including two #1’s) and two Gold-certified albums (House Of Ill FameDen Of Thieves). The quartet has also received multiple East Coast Music Awards, a CIMA Road Gold Award, an Independent Music Award (US) in 2009 for Best Rock / Metal Song, and numerous JUNO Award nominations.
DCAfter5 chatted with John Angus Macdonald of the Trews :
You went through a couple name changes at the beginning, how did you settle on “The Trews”?
We were One I’d Trouser (get it??) in our early, early days. That got shortened to Trouser over the course of a couple of years then on the eve of the release of our first EP we were served with a cease and desist order from another band that had the name Trouser so under great duress we changed it to the Trews and the name stuck. (Trews are a traditional Scottish Trouser)
How did you come together as a band?
My brother Colin and I started playing music together in our early teens. When we moved back to Antigonish, Nova Scotia after a few years abroad we put a band together with our pal Jack Syperek and have been playing ever since.
Do you have a favorite city and/or venue to play? Who has the best fans?
Not really. I good live show is like a lightning strike, it can happen anywhere at anytime. As long as the energy in the room is good and people aren’t dicks we can have a good time 🙂

Earls Kitchen + Bar is a family-owned Canadian restaurant group that has opened in eight U.S. locations, including one at Tysons Corner in Virginia. Have you been to Earls? What is your favorite dish?

Ya, we’ve been to many of them over the years. Mainly in western Canada. They are pretty famous for their steaks so I guess I’ll go with that…
